ECEN 4106 - Photonics


Catalog Data ECEN 4106(3). Photonics. Deals with the generation, transmission, modification, and detection of light. Applications include fiber optics communications, data storage, sensing, and imaging. Leads to understanding of fundamental physical principles used in the analysis and design of modern photonic systems. (Restricted to seniors.)
Credits and Design 3 credit hours. Elective course.

Course Objectives To provide a basic understanding of applied optics and optical instrumentation for the senior level of electrical engineering majors. This foundation should allow students to take advanced courses in this area or work in optics and applied optics.
Topics Covered
  1. Optical instrumentation including interference and diffraction, polarization, holography, and introduction to nonlinear optics.
  2. Geometrical ray tracing and optical lens design.
