ECEN 4606 - Undergraduate Optics Lab


Catalog Data ECEN 4606 (3). Undergraduate Optics Lab. Introduces fundamental concepts, techniques, and technology of modern optical and photonic systems. Individual labs cover particular fields of optical technology, including light sources such as lasers and leds, interferometers, fiber-optic communications, photodetection, spectrometers, and holography. Practical skills such as how to align an optical system will also be emphasized. .
Credits and Design 3 credit/5 contact hours. Selected elective course.
Prerequisite(s) ECEN 3400, Electromagnetic Fields and Waves.
Corequisite(s) ECEN 4106, Photonics, or equivalent.

Course Objectives For students to:
  1. Develop basic optics laboratory skills including competence in hands-on assembly and alignment, cleaning and safety, use of various instruments and the keeping of a good lab book.
  2. Understand the application of optics to real world problems including design of optical systems and the interaction of optics and electronics.
  3. Reinforce theoretical knowledge of photonics including optical components and common systems.
Learning Outcomes After taking this course students will be able to recognize and use the following concepts, ideas, and/or tools:
  1. Set up basic optical experiments, involving filtering, polarization, interference, and lasers/detectors.
  2. Good laboratory practice, including documentation of procedures and observations and writing lab reports.
  3. Introductory optics concepts, including Fourier optics, holography, optical communications, and fiber optics.
