Catalog Description: This course includes an introduction to lasers, Gaussian optics, modulators, nonlinear optics, optical devices, and other related devices.

Prerequisite: ECEN 3410, Electromagnetic Waves and Transmission

Course objectives:

To provide students with a background on the devices used in optical communications and lasers.

Topics:

EM theory, including anisotropic materials.
Ray matrix and optical waveguides.
Gaussian beams.
Optical resonators.
Interaction of light and atoms.
Laser theory and examples.
Second harmonic generation and parametric oscillators.
Electro-optical modulators.
Noise in optical detectors.
Semiconductor lasers.
