Course Objectives To provide students with a background on the devices used in optical communications and lasers.

  1. EM theory, including anisotropic materials.
  2. Ray matrix and optical waveguides.
  3. Gaussian beams.
  4. Optical resonators.
  5. Interaction of light and atoms.
  6. Laser theory and examples.
  7. Second harmonic generation and parametric oscillators.
  8. Electro-optical modulators.
  9. Noise in optical detectors.
  10. Semiconductor lasers.
