| COMPEL 2010 Summary |
| The 12th IEEE Workshop on Control and Modeling for Power Electronics, COMPEL 2010, was held on the campus of the University of Colorado at Boulder, June 28-30. The technical program consisted of 87 peer reviewed papers and 5 invited contributions arranged in nine oral presentation sessions and two poster/demo sessions. The Workshop attracted over 130 participants from over 20 countries. More than 40 participants were from industry. To allow the authors to present the very latest results, the final papers were due just two days before the start of the Workshop. Thanks to all authors for following the strict deadline, all papers were included on a memory stick handed out to the Workshop attendees. The high-quality contributions and the single-track Workshop format enabled lively exchanges of results and ideas on the latest advances in analysis, modeling, and control for power electronics. Breakfasts, lunches, breaks, a reception, and a banquet dinner offered more opportunbities to engage in interactive discusisons and to enjoy the venue. The Workshop concluded with three Best Paper Awards announced in the TESLA Motors showroom in downtown Boulder. |

To offer a snapshot of the outdoors Boulder is famous for, the banquet dinner was held in the Red Lion restaurant, a short bus drive up the Boulder Creek Canyon, with a backdrop of the Flatirons mountains west of the city of Boulder. There was some drama associated with this well planned event: just three weeks before the Workshop, the restaurant saw their only access bridge wash into Boulder Creek. Some options offered by a restaurant manager, as reported by the news ("legally, you can kayak to our place, or tube"), did not find many takers among the COMPEL attendees. Fortunately, a temporary bridge was erected just in time, weather was cooperative, and the Workshop attendees enjoyed a nice evening in the mountains.

For the first time, the Workshop presented Best Paper Awards. Three papers were selected based on their technical contributions and the presentations. No distinctions were made between oral or poster presentations, but an advantage was given to student presentations. The awards, presented in the TESLA Motors showroom in downtown Boulder Pearl Street, included test drive certificates for the all-electric Tesla Roadsters. Congratulations to the recipients!
