Warning about fradulent copies sold online through Amazon.com

If you have purchased a copy of the second edition of the textbook through Amazon.com or a similar entity at a reduced price, you likely will be shipped an illegal copy of the first printing of the second edition, shipped from China. On the ISBN page, you will find the text, "Student edition for sale only in the Republic of China".

All textbooks are intended for students, and no reduced-price "student edition" has been authorized for sale. Since the first printing, errata have been corrected several times in the legitimate version of the text, but these updates do not appear in the knockoff versions.

Some copies apparently omit the ISBN page altogether. This page should appear between the title page and the dedication page. Legitimate books always include a publisher's ISBN page.

Despite claims to the contrary on the Amazon.com website, the low-cost offerings of this book appear to be fradulent. It is disappointing that a US company of the size and stature of Amazon.com would continue to traffic in illegal copies of books.

As of October 2005, the second edition is in its eighth printing.
