Getting Started in the Labs
This page overviews
how to get started using the Cadence tools in our computer labs. The software is running on the ITS
server “magellan” and can be run remotely from any machine with x-terminal
capability. Setup procedures are
described below for using the machines in the SIMLAB (Linux) and
undergraduate labs (Windows).
Similar procedures can be followed from other machines on & off
campus by following the directions based on the appropriate operating system.
All
Approaches -- Enable your account on 'magellan':
- Go to http://cuconnect.colorado.edu
- Enter CU Login Name and IdentiKey Password
- Select the Plus tab from along the top
- Click "E-mail & Passwords" on the left of the screen
- Scroll down and select "Specialty Accounts"
- Validate for accounts by entering CUID and PIN
- Click "Make account on magellan" -- accept responsibilities, set password and account will usually
be enabled in the next 5 minutes
- If you do not have the "make account on magellan" option, send e-mail to
trouble@magellan with your CU email address and request an account on magellan.
SIMLAB
Machines (Sun Solaris Ultra 10 Workstations):
- Enable your account on the 'simlab' machines using the same procecure as magellan above, where you should have an option "make account on simlab". If not, send e-mail to trouble@simlab with your with your CU email address and request an account on simlab.
- Gain key access to the SIMLAB (ECME 269). Access is with your Buff-One card. If you
do not have access, send e-mail to Louis.Fails@colorado.edu
with the request for SIMLAB access for ECEN 5007 and the last 7 digits of your Buff-One
Card number. You can access the lab whenever it is not being used for a scheduled lecture.
- Log into the simlab Linux environment
- Open a terminal window (right click on screen)
- Open secure shell to magellan, type: '>ssh magellan'
- For printing: see http://www.colorado.edu/cpi for
instructions on using ITS printers
- Within Cadence, Select Plot Options … (button)
- Select: Plotter Name [simlab]
Undergraduate
Lab Machines (Windows NT/2000/XP via x-win):
1.
Gain
access to the labs. The undergraduate labs with x-windows installed include the
Circuits Lab (ECEE 281) and the Power Electronics Lab (ECEE 1B61B). You can use
any of the machines in these labs when they are not in use by another course.
All registered students should already have access using their Buff OneCard. Contact the ECE main office (ECEE 1B55) if your card is not enabled.
2.
Configure
your ECES account: go to: http://eces.colorado.edu/ and follow the directions
for setting up an account (same server as for CADLAB). Log onto a windows
machine.
3.
Configure then Start
X-Win32:
- Do this once (first time you log in):
- Start => Programs => X-Win32 7.1 => X-Config
- Under Sessions tab => Add ... => StarNetSSH => Next>
- Enter: Session Name: magellan; Host name: magellan.colorado.edu; Command: xterm
- You can also enter your magellan login and password for automated starup; otherwise it will ask you for your password each time.
- Save the new session and exit X-Config
- Start à Programs à X-Win32 7.1 à X-Win32 (the blue
