• 1972: First investigations

• 1976: Origin, concept of Finite State Machines

  • Definition of one process at once

• From 1980 to 1988

  • Structuring concepts add-on, inter-process communication
  • Abstract Data Types
  • 1988: steady and formal version, supported by tools

• 1992: additional object-oriented mechanisms have been introduced

• 1996: revised and stable version of SDL including OO

• MSC notation is complementary
