Homework Assignments

Some assignments will be modified from the last semester that the course was offered. If the assignment has been updated for this semester already, the date in the upper right corner of the assignment page will be for Spring, 2007. If the written date in the assignment is from Spring, 2006, the assignment may be changed before it is assigned in this semester! Therefore, NOTICE:

• HW #1 Introduction to Thinking Concurrently
• HW #2 (Week 2) Mutual Exclusion and Related Primitives For the assignment on Mutual Exclusion and Related Primitives, you will need the following documents. Each is 2 to 4 pages of reading.

• HW #3 Deadlock, Starvation, Etc. (Word doc)

• HW #4 and #5 Requirements and Design

• HW #6 Design
• Common solution for HW5 to use as basis for Hw 6. This is a PowerPoint file. If that's a problem for you, let me know right away and I'll create a Word doc with the same pictures.

• HW #7 Rate Monotonic Analysis homework in pdf file. The file does not show a due date. It is due Tuesday, March 13, 2007. NOTE: The description of the file says to use the timelines provided. However, this homework file is now a pdf file. You may create timeline templates that look like these in Word or another tool I can access. OR you may print the pdf timeline, draw on it, scan, and return a pdf for the timeline portion.

• HW #8 Multiprogramming Issues: Memory Management, IO, and File Systems Word doc format
  

• HW #9 in preparation for Software Performance Engineering guest lecture. It is due the Thursday after Spring Break. You will not be able to read Chapters 1 - 4 of Performance Solutions (your 2nd textbook) AND get this lengthy assignment done if you only allow yourself a few days to do it all. The syllabus suggested reading the chapters many weeks ago.

  The SPE-ED zip file is now available to download the Software Performance Engineering Tool.

• HW #10: This is an assignment to be done individually, partly because people may be needing to finish taxes or participate in Passover or Easter activities. Starting April 7, 2006 and due April 20, 2006 your assignment is to understand a performance engineering pattern and an anti-pattern and "present" them with your own examples. That is, create a PowerPoint presentation (or something visually equivalent in Word or in a text file) that
  -- explains a pattern and gives an example THAT IS NOT TAKEN FROM THE BOOK
  -- explains an antipattern and gives an example THAT IS NOT TAKEN FROM THE BOOK OR THE PAPER
  The patterns come from Performance Solutions, Chapter 10. The antipatterns can come from Performance Solutions, Chapter 11 or from one of the following articles about additional Antipatterns.

  When you decide which pattern and which antipattern you want to cover, post a message to the appropriate discussion thread on the course web site. Make sure all of the patterns have been selected before picking one someone else has already selected. There are enough antipatterns for everyone to pick a different one.
